About the Humber Bridge
About the Humber Bridge
The Humber Bridge is 1.4 miles/2.22 km long and each of the hollow towers stands 510 feet/155.5 metres tall.

The bridge was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on July 17th 1981. Tt held the record as world's longest single-span suspension bridge for 16 years and is still the longest bridge in the world that can be crossed on foot or by bicycle.

The road deck is engineered like an upside-down aircraft wing to stay stable in winds reaching 80mph, which allows the bridge to bend up to 3m in strong gales.

The bridge carries an average of 35,000 vehices a day, totaling over 10 million vehicles per year.

The two 155.5 meter tall concrete towers are 36mm further apart at the top than at the bottom to accommodate the curvature of the earth.
